Well we are here in New York City! After arriving here quite late on Sunday night, Amanda tried to get as much sleep as she could and was up bright and early for her placement audition. The line wound around the block as we went to ABT that first morning! All the girls also had a pointe shoe fitting during which it was determined whether or not they had the proper shoes. Amanda's shoes were fine for her--the fitter just recommended certain Freed makers that might be better for her than others. (She also gave us the name of a contact in Freed who might be able to help us get the shoes.) However, I overheard one girl emerging at the end of the day telling her mom that her pointe shoes didn't fit properly and that she needed all new pointe shoes before she could dance. Of course the girls all had to bring 6-10 pairs of pointe shoes to ABT, so I would imagine this mom wasn't too happy. Actually though, it is good that they make sure the girls are dancing in the right shoes before class begins. Amanda also had orientation yesterday and discovered that the most stressful part so far is figuring out where you are going! The building is very large and has a lot of floors. Many of the doors have no handles and others say "do not enter!" One girl was heard describing it as a maze and Amanda thought that was an apt characterization.
This is Amanda the morning before she went for her first day! I think her day went pretty well! Today she finds out the results of her placement audition and starts her first full day of actual classes. Yesterday was filled with the placement audition, orientation, and the pointe shoe fitting. We went to a nice restaurant in Union Square last night called City Crab--it was fun. Bruce left a couple of hours ago to go back to Virginia--he was great about helping us to get all set up and navigating through the Lincoln Tunnel and a lot of one way streets! Our car was even still there when he went to pick it up at the parking garage this morning!
We hope you are all enjoying a wonderful beginning of the summer! Thank you for your interest and support! Amanda and Beth
